The Armour of God #6

Helmet of Salvation

Is it not wonderful news to believe that the Helmut of Salvation lies outside ourselves?

We’re busy in a series on the armour of God – this is the sixth part to this series.

We’re going to look at the helmet of salvation.

Ephesians 6:13-17 “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. *14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” NIV

*Stand firm then: In other words; You are already dressed for success and victory.

The helmet represents two things;

Authority

The bible says, take the helmet of salvation.

Salvation is a free gift…you can’t buy it or earn it or pay for it because Jesus has already paid for it.

All you’ve got to do is take it or receive it just like you receive any other gift.

If you decide to receive it, it means you say yes to Christ as your Lord and Saviour.

What Paul is saying is, if you want to be able to stand against the enemy you’ve got to say yes to Christ.

You cannot say NO to the Devil until you’ve said YES to Christ.

He’ll laugh at you!!

You cannot resist the devil until you’ve submitted to Christ.

But the moment you say YES to Christ His power and authority is available to you.

Luke 10:19 (NIV) – I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Acts 1:8 You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses.

Without the power of God, you are defenseless against the Devil.

But the moment you surrender your life to God, you say yes to Christ, it means you now have His power and His authority available to you.

Ephesians 6:10 Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.

The principle is this – you have authority when you’re under authority.

Matthew 8:9-10 (NIV) – 9”For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”  10When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”

When a Roman soldier takes that helmet, it signified that he was under the authority of the Roman government.

When he gave an order or an instruction he was backed by the full force of the Roman government.

It’s the same today when a traffic officer puts up his hand and tells you to stop……on his cap and on his chest is a symbol of the traffic department…..that gives him the authority

You don’t stop because he / she looks so mean, but because of the authority they represent.

When Paul says take the helmet he’s saying, put on your authority.

God wants His power and authority to flow through your life.

The problem is many times we’re not aware of this power.

It’s like driving a car in the heat and you’re not aware that the car has an air conditioner – you can’t use something if you’re not aware that you have it.

In the same way you can’t use God’s power and authority if you’re not aware that you have it.

You can’t impart it to others if you’re not aware of it.

**You impart the thing you’re most aware of.

When you’re down and discouraged you impart that to others, you don’t even have to try.

When you’re anxious and fearful about the future you impart that to others.

When you’re aware that you’re a child of the Most High God and that you carry His power on the inside of you, you start imparting that to others, you don’t even have to try. (It’s God confidence- a Boldness)

You need to start seeing yourself as God sees you – you’re a child of the Most High – You carry the Spirit and the power of the Living God.

Take the helmet!!

Jesus had authority because He was under authority, He was fully submitted to the authority of the Father.

John 14:31 I do exactly what the Father has commanded me. NLT

In the Garden of Gethsemane He said; Not my will be done but yours.

In the Lord’s Prayer He teaches us to adopt that same attitude and to pray it …… Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done…….

He’s teaching us to submit to authority because our authority is linked to our submission.

One of the most basic forms of submission is obedience, obedience to the word of God.

Some Christians want to obey 80% of the word but there’s 20% they battle with – that’s not obedience, that’s partial obedience…..its disobedience.

It’s not what you believe that gives you greater power and authority, it’s what you submit to.

If we want greater power and authority in our lives we need to fully submit to the authority of God’s word.

The helmet represents two things;

Authority
Protection

The main reason for a helmet was to protect the head.

Spiritually speaking it’s to protect the mind.

Why, because the enemy’s favourite area to attack is the mind.

Paul is saying, take the helmet of salvation;

Put yourself under the authority.
You’ve got to protect your mind.

There are so many Christians today walking around feeling

that they are not quite good enough,
that they’re not really serving God as they should,
that they’re failing too often,

They’ve been listening to the voice of the enemy!

They haven’t protected their mind!

There is nothing that he would like more than to see our destruction.

What’s interesting, when Paul tells us to take the helmet of salvation, he’s not addressing unsaved people, he’s addressing believers.

He’s telling saved people to think saved.

He’s telling free people to think like free people.

(The elephant tied to a steel pole as a baby)

We can sing about freedom and talk about freedom but not live in freedom.

That’s when we live with the wrong mindset…..putting ourselves down.

When we live with the wrong habits ……thinking it’s OK.

It’s the same as free people living as slaves. (Prison of war camps)

There are some people, they love the Lord and they come to church every Sunday but …….

there’s still strife in the home,
they’re still critical and judgmental toward others,
they’ve still got some bitterness in their hearts toward someone,

They keep battling with some of the same sins and bad habits that they used to before they got saved.

They’re free people living as slaves!

Maybe you find yourself in that position and you’re saying;

Well, this is just who I am!

No, that’s not who you really are!

You are a child of the Most High God and He’s paid the ultimate price so that you can be totally free from those things!

Ephesians 1:4 “Because of the sacrifice Christ made we are a free people, and not just barely free but abundantly free.”

The enemy will tell you that you can be free from most of the bad habits and sins of your past but there is that one thing that you’re going to have to  put up with. You’ve got to settle for that.

That’s a lie!

Take the helmet ……protect your thinking.

The enemy is very aware that your life is going to follow your thoughts, and so he is constantly going to bombard you with;

thoughts of defeat
thoughts of worry
thoughts of hopelessness
negative thoughts
thoughts that you are not quite good enough.

That’s where we’ve got to guard our thinking.

Somebody once said, make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your ears.

Romans 12:2 Do not conform to the pattern of the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Who does that? You do. You’ve got to renew your mind.

You are responsible for your thought life

2Corinthians 10:5 “We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”

Notice it says; we have to do it, we control our thoughts, not God!

Another translation says; Stop your stinking thinking

Philippians 4:8 Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honourable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

Notice it doesn’t say, try and think about a few positive things every once in a while. – No it says, fix your thoughts on positive things.

Now listen to the next verse…..

9 Then the God of peace with be with you.

Some people wonder why they don’t have peace …… the God of peace doesn’t hang around pessimism and negativity and fear and anxiety.

He’s the most positive being in the universe, and that’s why He tells us to fix our thoughts ……… to be careful how we think.

Proverbs 4:23 Be careful how you think, your life is shaped by your thoughts. GNB

You want to change your life, change your thoughts.

In closing, here’s one last thought.

When things don’t go your way, the enemy is going to work overtime to bombard you with negative and discouraging thoughts!

Somebody hurt you……..
Somebody is talking about you at the office ……
Something unfair happened to you…..

When things don’t go your way, be on your guard, keep your helmet on, and protect your mind.

That is when you’ve really got to stand strong and make a conscious decision to stay in a positive frame of mind.

Let me share three powerful words with you??

These three words will save you tremendous heartache and pain

These three words, if you teach them to your children and practice them with your children, it will set them up to become more mature individuals

Three powerful words……..I’ll give them to you next week……you ready for them?

Here it is ……. GET OVER IT.

I wonder how many jobs have been lost……..because people couldn’t get over some little issue.

I wonder how many marriages have been ruined because people didn’t keep their helmet on.

I wonder how many friendships have been destroyed because people didn’t guard their minds.
