The Armour of God #2
(Myths about the Armour of God)
By Pastor George Lehman
“The more trust we place in the Lord and His promises the greater will be our victory over the attacks of Satan. While the *less we know and trust His promises the more vulnerable we will be.” – Steve A. Cramer
Ephesians 6:11-12 (NIV) – *11Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
*Make sure the armour is activated
Myth #1 – Life is a Picnic
Even through all evidence shows the opposite.
So many often seem to believe that life here on earth is or at least ought to be EASY!
In reality, however life is hard often very hard.
The Bible clearly tells us we can expect it to be
According to the Bible, the Christian life is not a picnic but a battle
An Armed struggle against a powerful adversary (teenstander)
To engage in this battle properly and victoriously we need a spiritual makeover
Our flesh life of plakkies and T-shirts is inadequate
It is replaced by suitable armour and weaponry
Without that Armour and weaponry we will be unprepared for what faces us.
Myth #2 – The Armour of God is only for “Super Christians”
There are NOT two separate classes of Christians: Christian Soldiers – Christian Civilians NO There are only prepared and un-prepared Christian Soldiers
An unprepared soldier of flesh and blood will not be able to stand against the scale of the spiritual forces ranged against you.
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) – For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Hebrews 6:12 (NIV) – We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
In many respects the dark world in which we live is Satan’s playground
1 John 5:19 (Amp) – We know [for a fact] that we are of God, and the whole world [around us] lies in the power of the evil one [opposing God and His precepts].
There are tempting sights, sounds and tastes in this world that so easily dazzle and attract us into sin.
Satan has centuries of experience as a tempter
The powerful combination of the world, the flesh and the devil is inevitably (onvermydelik) overwhelming left to ourselves
Paul in Ephesians doesn’t merely say “Bring the Armour along with you on the off chance you might need it.” You will need it – “PUT IT ON”
Myth #3 – In the Modern world we can’t believe in a literal devil
Many modern people find the idea of a Cosmic being whom we can’t see, feel or touch and who promotes evil in this world, unthinkable.
And yet there is more than enough evidence of evil in the world today!
The Bible has a richer and deeper explanation for a sad world we find ourselves in.
It explains the reality of evil so we can recognise the invisible, personal spiritual forces that lie behind it.
Matthew 4:1 (NIV) – Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil
Job 1:8 (NIV) – Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”
Luke 22:31 (NIV) – “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.”
Revelation 12:12 (NIV) – Therefore rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and sea, because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.”
Myth #4 – The Armour of God is primarily (Hoofsaaklik) a list of behaviour standards that I need to achieve
The common view that Christian Armour is a set of disciplines we must perform to measure up as Christians
It’s certainly true that God’s Armour describes essential qualities for us to pursue passionately if we are to stand firm under Satan’s assaults
Yet the Armour is first and foremost God’s Armour rather than ours
The gospels tell us that the divine warrior (Jesus) gives us His equipment
Which He wore first triumphantly in our place against the forces of evil.
Jesus Christ is the triumphant warrior over Satan, death and sin through His faithfulness and standing firm.
Victory is now credited to us as if it were our own.
Because Jesus stood firm in His battle, we Christians weak, fearful and unprepared as we so often are…. will also ultimately stand.
By faith His Righteousness becomes ours
2 Corinthians 5:21 (Amp) – He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we would be made acceptable to Him and placed in a right relationship with Him by His gracious loving kindness].
The Armour of God speaks of God’s mercy and grace to broken sinners,
that we too can take up His Armour and live a victorious overcoming life.
Romans 8:37 (Amp) – Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors and gain an overwhelming victory through Him who loved us [so much that he died for us].
