Last week we spoke about wisdom of the World = Earthly – Secular / Unspiritual – Sensual / Demonic.
The Wisdom of the WORD.
“Great is Wisdom; infinite is the value of wisdom. It cannot be exaggerated it is the Highest achievement of man.” – Carlyle
(The message of Proverbs is Wisdom)
James 3:17-18 (NIV) – 17But* the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.”
*But – There is more…
The word *BUT that begins verse 17 is not there by accident. Having just described the nature of worldly wisdom – he then contrasted it with wisdom from above
*But – Tells us there is a better way.
James says there is a wisdom available to us.
This wisdom of the word comes from God.
It’s God who enables us to apply His wisdom to our earthly challenges – to our everyday life.
This wisdom has a divine origin – James says it comes “from above”
The wise Solomon puts it this way: Proverbs 2:6 (NIV) – “The Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Wisdom is God’s supernatural gift to any of us who ask Him for it.
Paul acknowledged God as the source of Wisdom when praying for the Ephesians Church:
Ephesians 1: 17-19 (Ampl) – 17 [I always pray] that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may grant you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation* [that gives you a deep and personal and intimate insight] into the true knowledge of Him [for we know the Father through the Son]. 18 And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the [a]hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the [b]saints (God’s people), 19 and [so that you will begin to know] what the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His [active, spiritual] power is in us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of His mighty strength.”
*Revelation – Knowledge and understanding
We won’t find godly wisdom through any kind of Education or practical experience.
After all, it is learned – James laid it out;
James 1:5-6 (NIV) – 5“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” 6”But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts* is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”
*He who doubts – The Wisdom is made available when you ask – We hit the switch of faith to make it work = “A Faith that words.”
This wisdom from above is freely given to those who simply ask, BUT we must ask in faith, believing God will hear our prayer and provide.
This wisdom comes to us by the living word – by the Lord Jesus Himself.
John 1:1 (NIV) – “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Paul put it this way:®
1 Corinthians 1:24 & 30 (NIV) – 24”but to those who whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” 30”It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”
Therefore our first step in finding wisdom is to come to know Jesus as our personal Saviour and Lord.
Then Godly wisdom also comes from the written Word (The Bible)
Paul wrote this to Timothy: ®
2 Timothy 3:15 (NIV) – “and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise from salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.”
Note: James 3:17 (NIV) – 17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate*, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit impartial and sincere.
*Considerate – Patience, Gentleness
When we begin to apply heaven’s wisdom in our lives, the benefits are:
#1 Purity or Spiritual integrity – results
The wisdom of the world brings *perversion but godly wisdom results in *purity
*Perversion: Verleiding, Slegtheid, Verkeerheid, dwaarsheid
*Purtiy : Reinheid, Suiwerheid
We don’t become pure through our own good works or efforts.
We only become pure before God through the blood of Jesus and His finished work on the cross.
That wisdom enables us to live a life of Purity.
Matthew 5:8 (NIV) – “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
#2 A pure person walking in the wisdom of the word will be as James says “Peace-loving.”
Matthew 5:9 (NIV) – “Blessed are the peacemakers*, for they will be called sons of God.”
*Peacemakers – Not lovers of peace
Christ blesses the active promoters of unity and peace.
#3 Another benefit that comes when we apply the wisdom of God to our lives is patience or as James puts it “Gentleness.”
With it comes a willingness to yield – showing consideration for others.
Notice: It’s the exact opposite of the envy we see in those who apply worldly wisdom.
#4 Next James referred to being “Full of Mercy.”
A clear evidence of God’s wisdom is characterized by an abundance of mercy and forgiveness.
James 2:13 (NIV) – “because judgement without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgement.”
#5 Then James added “Full of Good Fruits.”
Jesus reminded us that His followers will be known “By their fruit.”
Matthew 7:20 (NIV) – “Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”
#6 And finally heavens wisdom results in our being – “Without partiality without Hypocrisy.”
Story of the Ancient Greek drama – Same person changing from one character to another; He would wear different masks – from the Hero to the Villain.
They called such an actor a “Hypocrite.” (Someone two faced – hiding behind a mask)
James was telling us that people living according to wisdom from above don’t hide behind a mask
Heaven’s wisdom is “without Hypocrisy.”
The wisdom of the Word can change your life.
We must choose between the wisdom of the WORLD and the wisdom of the WORD.
We aren’t Puppets – we are people of God.
The wisest decision anyone can make is to line up their life on God’s side.
