Keep your eyes on Jesus .
Happy New Year Bikers Church
May this year be full of God’s blessings and favour.
I pray that God will undertake for you and guide every step you take.
I know as we consider this next year, in the forefront of our minds is Covit-19, and we’re wondering;
What is this year going to hold?
What’s going to happen next?
When are things going to return to normal?
I want to remind you, this virus hasn’t caught God by surprise.
God can bless you in spite of Covit.
God can undertake for you in spite of Covit.
As a matter of fact, God is going to use Covit to fulfil His plans and purposes in your life.
All we’ve got to do, is keep our eyes on Jesus.
Remember what happened to Peter when he took his eyes off of Jesus?
He started sinking.
What interesting about that story – when Peter walked on the water, Jesus was right there.
When Peter started sinking, Jesus was right there.
Jesus was there when he walked on the water and Jesus was there when he was sinking.
The problem wasn’t with Jesus, the problem was that Peter took his eyes off Jesus.
The mistake that so many people make is to take their eyes off Jesus and to focus on ‘What if?’
What if this….
What if that….
Then they wonder why they don’t have victory, why they’re so stressed and they don’t have peace.
Isaiah 26:3 You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you.
That’s basically saying – if you’ll fix your thoughts on Him you’ll have peace. If you’ll fix your eyes on Him you’ll have victory.
One of Job’s friends makes this observation.
Job 8:13 Those who forget God have no hope. LB
Isn’t that so true – the more you focus on all your problems, the less hope you have, but the more you focus on God, the more hope you have.
One of the ways that we keep our eyes on Jesus is by keeping our eyes on His promises.
Hebrews 6:18-19 “So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” NLT
The Bible is saying, when you keep your eyes on God and His promises, it becomes an anchor in your life.
An anchor is something that a captain uses to make sure that his ship or boat doesn’t drift into trouble. The anchor keeps it in a safe place.
You and I are going to face some currents this coming year;
You’re going to hear negative news reports
You’re going to see people make bad decisions
You’re going to feel fear creeping in
Those things act like a current trying to drag you off course.
But when you’re anchored to hope,
it doesn’t matter what 2021 holds,
it doesn’t matter what the news reports say,
it doesn’t matter what the markets are doing,
because you have an anchor, your hope is in God.
When we put our hope in God, it means we put our hope in His word.
Psalms 130:5 “I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.”
Psalms 119:81 “I have put my hope in your word.”
To the unbeliever hope is simply wishful thinking;
They’re late for a meeting – I hope that light will turn green.
They buy a lottery ticket – I hope I win the lottery. You’re more likely to be struck by lightning. Statistically, the odds are more likely for you to be truck by lightning than win the Lottery.
But to the believer hope is solid, because it’s grounded in the Word of God and we know that God cannot lie. Heb 6:18 Num 23:19
There will always be something trying to get us to pull up our anchor.
A bad report from the Dr.
Those things will tell us, you may as well give up, you’re not going to make it, you may as well pull up your anchor.
That’s when your attitude needs to be;
This deal may have gone wrong, but I’m not going to be foolish and pull up my anchor.
The report from the dr. isn’t great, but I know God is my healer.
The markets don’t look great, but God is bigger than any market.
I’m trusting for healing
I’m trusting for a breakthrough
I’m trusting for a miracle because God is a miracle working God, He’s the God of the impossible.
Isaiah 49:23 “Those who hope in me will not be disappointed.”
When a boat is anchored, it doesn’t mean that it cannot move at all.
It will still move a little bit this way and a little bit that way, but the anchor keeps it from drifting into trouble.
In the same way, when you are anchored to hope, when your hope is in the Lord, you’ll have moments when you have negative thoughts, moments when you doubt if God is going to come through for you.
But then your faith kicks in, your anchor pulls you back and you know God is still in control.
If you find yourself negative and discouraged, not just for a couple of moments, but ongoing………it’s because you’ve pulled up your anchor.
You’ve taken your eyes off of Jesus and you’re focussing on the waves.
The good news is you can quickly put your anchor down again.
You can correct the situation.
This is what David did – one day he was so down and discouraged. He had pulled up his anchor.
That shows me that discouragement can come to the best of us.
There are times when we all feel a bit down or discouraged, but you don’t have to stay there.
The moment you become aware of it, put your anchor down again.
Listen to what David says to himself;
Psalms 42:5 “Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God!” NLT
It’s the same as saying,
I will put my anchor down
I will put my eyes back on God.
I will put my confidence in Him.
It’s a decision that you’ve got to make – I can either stay down and discouraged or I can put my hope in God.
When God promised Abraham a child, they were 80 years old.
Humanly speaking it was impossible.
On top of that, God took his time …. The years went by and there was no child. The situation just seemed more and more impossible.
Are you facing an impossible situation at the moment?
Something where you’re thinking, I don’t know how this is ever going to happen?
Romans 4:18 When there was nothing left to hope for, Abraham still hoped and believed. As a result, he became the father of many nations.
He kept his anchor down, he kept his eyes on God and God came through for Him.
When you’re anchored to hope it doesn’t mean you won’t have disappointments and setbacks.
O you will, life is full of them, but you can also be full of confidence and courage because your hope is in God.
The Bible says in Psalms 33:20 We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
Another way to say it – We put our hope in the Lord. …..because…..
He is our help and our shield.
Because I have confidence in Him.
Because I trust Him.
The bible says, hope is the anchor for our souls.
It doesn’t matter what happens in 2021, as long as you keep your hope and confidence in God, then 2021 is going to be a good year.
What is hope?
Well, I’ll tell you what it’s not – hope is not optimism.
It’s trying to convince yourself that something is true when you know it’s not really.
Nothing wrong with being an optimist. I lean that way, there’s no doubt, but being optimistic isn’t the same as having hope.
Optimism says, it’s not as bad as you think.
Hope says, it’s bad……..but I still believe God can turn it around
