Hope series #6 – Our hope is a secure anchor

Our Hope is a secure Anchor

“Hope holds you fast like an anchor so you don’t give way, it makes you strong when you can’t be.”

We see throughout scripture that HOPE is an essential and vital piece of spiritual armour

It is through those times of crises and real hardships that we learn the proper place of hope in a Christian’s life

I want to present you with this beautiful picture of hope

Some practical tools for allowing hope to govern our lives.

Hebrews 6:19-20 – This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek

Notice this anchor of hope passes out of time into eternity

It is fastened onto the Rock of Ages; attached to the very presence of Almighty God.

This passage says, “Hope is an Anchor.”

What needs an anchor? Well a ship needs an anchor.

Why? Because a ship floats on water which is an unstable element.

You can’t attach an anchor to the water.

Therefore in order to be held secure in the rough waters of tribulations, trials and hardships.

The anchor must be passed through the unstable waters into some complete secure solid object that will hold steady and not move.

We all live in an unstable world, which is temporal, impermanent and insecure.

There is nothing for us to fasten on to in this world which will guarantee us security.

Therefore for true stability we must have an anchor which passes out of time into eternity.

It must pass out of the temporal, the martial, and the unstable to the unchangeable, totally stable and secure.

This anchor so beautifully describes our hope in Jesus

It is not restricted to time, it does not depend on material possessions, its based on two unchangeable truths.

Hebrews 6:18 (Summed up this way) “In which it is impossible for God to lie. = His Word and His Oath (eed) } His unchangeable truths.

Our hope as an anchor passes right out of time into the immediate presence of God.

Hebrews 4:16 (NIV) – Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

All the treasures of this world upon which people depend for security only lasts for a short time; they will pass away.

But your anchor of eternal hope reaches beyond this world into God’s  presence.

Hebrews 6:20 – Where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

The function of the High Priest is to represent before God those who trust in Him.

Hebrews 7:25 (NIV) – He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever.

He is the eternal rock in which our hope is anchored.

As I close:

Let us take a moment to reflect on the profound (diepgaande) truth of our Hope being anchored to the eternal Rock, Jesus Christ

Everything around us may seem unstable and shaky:

Big changes and uncertainty face us

It can be enough to cause us to slip into fear, dismay (ontsteltenis) and hopelessness.

But then comes this awesome picture of us throwing out our anchor by faith calling on the Name of Jesus.

Hebrews 11:1 (LB) – What is faith? It is the confident assurance that something we want is going to happen. It is the certainty that what we hope for is waiting for us, even though we cannot see it ahead.

Let’s pray:

Thank you Jesus, that the hope we have is firmly anchored in You.

By Your word and Your oath

Thank you Lord that in a very stormy time in history

I am stable and secure in You

I fully place my life and my trust in You

You alone are our hope in a hopeless world

In Jesus Name

Amen.
