4 Things everyone should know about Hell…

4 Things everyone should know about Hell…

(Hell is getting out of date by today’s thinking, but it’s not out of business)

Pastor George Lehman

A fire alarm is a warning – it is very irritating.  If you don’t heed the warning the consequences can be fatal.  If there was a fire, would you not be thankful for an EARLY WARNING to get away as quick as possible?  A fire alarm is not for a select few people, it’s for everyone.

You will not go to hell because you made a bad start, but because you made a bad finish.

Our scripture reading – Luke 16:19-31(NIV) – 19”There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22”The time came when the beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ 25”But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ 27He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ 30’No father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ 31He said to him, ‘if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.”

Out of these verses there are 4 things I see that Jesus tells us about Hell.

The 1st spiritual truth we learn is that:

Hell may be in your future even if you are presently prospering.

Luke 16:19 (NIV) – 19   “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.

Here’s a person that could be like anyone of us here.

He had money – he ate well, he had a good job, he had transport, he seemed to be in good health, he had a home.

Maybe in the eyes of people he appeared to be blessed, to be a Christian.  I mean he must be on his way to heaven.

There is no reason to be worried about the future life, after all, I’m not that bad!!  So many people think that because they don’t experience God’s Judgment or anger in this life, while they live just like they want to.

They are OK for the life to come.

Listen:

Your present status is no indicator of your future destiny.

Matthew 24:13 (Amp) – But he who endures to the end will be saved.

Why did the rich man go to hell:

Because he was rich? – NO
Abraham was also very rich, but he was in heaven.

Luke 16:20-22 (NIV) – 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22”The time came when the beggar died, and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried.

The rich man was in hell because he was not right with God.

The second thing everyone needs to know is:

Hell is a place of eternal torment and agony.

The sad thing is that books, preachers, churches and so many people tone down what Jesus said so clearly about Hell.

If we are going to take Jesus seriously, we must take what He said about hell very seriously too.

Some of the many references in the gospels Jesus spoke about:

Matthew 13:42 (Amp) – And will cast them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and wailing and grinding of teeth.

Matthew 10:28 (Amp) – And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul, but rather be afraid of Him who can destroy both soul and body in HELL.

Luke 16:23-25 (NIV) – 23In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

The story begins to unfold.  Notice how Jesus strongly and intensely describes Hell in this story.

Revelation 20:11-15 (NIV) – 11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Before we come to the 3rd thing, everyone should know about Hell, many people wonder: “How could a good God send some people to Hell?”

This is really a foolish question.  Think about this – we don’t ask, “How could a good judge send a serial killer to the electric chair?”

The answer is: because the judge is not the one responsible for him going to the electric chair.  It’s his own individual choice.  God is good – but people end up in hell because of their own choices.

God does not send anyone to Hell – they only chose not to go to heaven.  The choice is yours right now.

Luke 16:26 (NIV) – 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

This verse tells us the 3rd thing everyone should know about Hell.

Hell is a place without hope.

Once in Hell, there is NO HOPE of crossing over or getting a second chance:

No hope of escape
No hope of relief
No hope of parole or pardon or doing time
Your fate is forever sealed
It’s too late to pray
It’s too late to repent

A classic book “Danté’s Inferno” – Hell is described in graphic detail.

In the story there’s a sign at hell’s entrance which says, “Abandon hope all who enter here”.

Hell is a place without hope.

Luke 16:27-31 (NIV) – 27He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers.

What is the fourth thing everyone should know about Hell?  Here’s the Good news:

Hell can be avoided if a person listens and obeys God’s word and repents

At a Senate Meeting one of the Senators angrily told another, “Go straight to Hell”.

The offended senator complained to Vice President Calvin Coolidge.  Paging through a book in front of him, Coolidge looked up and wittily replied, “I’ve been looking through the rule book”, he said, “you don’t have to go”.

This is true for every one of us here watching this sermon.  YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO TO HELL!!

Verse 27-28 (NIV) – 27He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

The rich man realizes that his family don’t have to go to hell.

His cry was: – if someone could go give them the Good News.  Today you have it.

Accept Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour.  Commit your life over to Him.

Don’t try change the fruit.  Change the root.  Don’t change things, allow God to change your heart.

If you do when you die you will enter the Joy/Peace of heaven forever.

The choice always remains yours and mine.  I know that Hell is not a popular or pleasant subject, but like the noise of the alarm, knowledge of Hell can save your life.

What is it everyone should know about Hell?

Hell may be in your future right now even if you are thinking everything is ok.
Hell is a place of eternal torment and agony.
Hell is a place without hope.

The Good News is:

Hell can be avoided if you listen and are obedient to God’s word and repent.

Amen.
