Praying earnestly through Corona
“Prayer can never be in excess.” – C.H. Spurgeon
By Pastor George Lehman
2 Chronicles 7:13-14 13“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn* from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (If you obey – I will do what I promised)
*Turn – There will be consequences good / bad.
2 clear commands out of this message from God
TURN – was the command
PRAY – is the required action to fulfil the command (a praying person is not a straying person)
Everyone of us have attempted to pray in one or another way during this difficult corona time. God protects us, provides for us and heals us.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 (Amp) – Be unceasing in prayer [praying perseveringly]
God makes all His best people in loneliness. Do you know what the secret of praying is? Praying in secret. – Leonard Ravenhill.
Matthew 6:6 (Amp) – But when you pray, go into your [most] private room, and, closing the door, pray to your Father, Who is in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you in the open.
There is nothing more *transfiguring than prayer.
*transfiguring (gedaante te verander)= transform into something more beautiful. (Worm to a Butterfly)
Jesus set the example, when you study the Gospels
We could change the title of the Gospel of Luke to the Gospel of prayer.
It’s the prayer life of Jesus.
The other Gospels say that Jesus chose 12 disciples.
Luke says it was after He spent a night in prayer that He chose 12 disciples.
The other gospels say that Jesus was in the Jordan and the Spirit descended on Him as a dove.
Luke says it was while He was praying that the Holy Spirit descended on Him.
The other gospels say that Jesus died on a cross.
Luke says even when He was dying Jesus was praying for those who persecuted Him. Jesus did not say, “I am finished”, He said, “It is finished”.
The other Gospels say Jesus went on a mount and He was transfigured (Peter, James, John, Moses & Elijah).
Luke says it was while He was praying that He was transfigured.
There is nothing more transfiguring than prayer.
The scriptures says that the disciples went to bed, but Jesus went to pray, as was His custom.
If Jesus needed all that time in prayer, don’t you think we need time in prayer?
If Jesus needed prayer for every crisis, decision, breakthrough, victory and miracle…
…how much more you and I?
Your prayer life shows how much you depend on your own ability…
…and how much you really believe that there is power in prayer.
The more self-confidence you have, the less you pray. The less self-confidence you have, the more you pray.
True prayer is a two-way communication. I speak to God and God speaks to me.
I don’t know how the Spirit makes communication or why God needs me to pray, but that’s how God works.
Jeremiah 33:2-3 (Amp) – 2 Thus says the Lord Who made [the earth], the Lord Who formed it to establish it—the Lord is His name: 3 Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things, fenced in and hidden, which you do not know (do not distinguish and recognize, have knowledge of and understand).
That is prayer
The suddenly of God
Malachi 3:1 (LB) – “Listen: I will send my messenger before me to prepare the way. And then the One you are looking for will come suddenly to his Temple—the Messenger of God’s promises, to bring you great joy. Yes, he is surely coming,” says the Lord Almighty.
God is a God of the suddenly.
Isaiah 48:3 (LB) – Time and again I told you what was going to happen in the future. My words were scarcely spoken when suddenly I did just what I said.
Acts 12:5 & 7 (NIV) – 5 So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him. 7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
God makes a way where there seems to be no way.
The angel fetched Peter out of prison, but it was prayer that fetched the angel.
When Peter arrived, they didn’t believe it – Acts 12:13-16.
Story of a church in Moravia:
There’s a date in history that I love very much. It was Wednesday, August 13, 1737. A little group of people in Moravia (a place in the Czech Republic) were waiting in a prayer meeting. At 11:00 suddenly the Holy Spirit came. Do you know what happened? The prayer meeting that began at 11:00 lasted 100 years! That’s right. That prayer room was not empty for a century! It is the longest prayer among men and women that I know of. Even children 6 and 7 years old travailed in prayer for countries the names of which they couldn’t even spell.
You know why we don’t see God move in a mighty way?
Simply because we’re content and comfortable to live without it!
People say “I’m filled with the Holy Spirit”.
If the coming of the Spirit didn’t revolutionize your prayer life…
… I’m not so sure you got what God intends for you to get.
Romans 8:26-27 (NIV) – 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
Notice: The Spirit prays. How do I activate this? Simply by praying.
This happens when I am busy praying, not when I’m being idle and prayerless, on the couch in front of the TV
Prayer releases power over our lives, our circumstances.
Prayer doesn’t change things. Prayer changes people and they change things.
James 5:16b (Amp) – The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].
We need to become constant in our prayers through this Corona season.
If you want your exit to be greater than your entrance you need to:
TURN and PRAY!
